In our area, we get a lot of rain and sometimes floods can happen. Buildings in our area can become flooded with concentrated rainfall coupled with inadequate local drainage systems. Being over-prepared is better than not at all. We have compiled a list of actions to put in place before a storm hits to make sure you are prepared. The National Flood Insurance Program has a lot of helpful tips for a homeowner to know before a storm hits.

  1. Make sure you fully understand what perils and covered and excluded in your policy.
  2. Make sure your coverage is adequate to replace your home and contents in today’s dollar.
  3. Determine whether your policy covers additional living expenses for a temporary residence if you are unable to live in your home because of damage from a disaster.
  4. Before hurricane season, prepare detailed written and/or photographic inventory of your home’s contents and store it in a safe place with your policy.
  5. If your insurance company does not cover flood dame, ask about coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program.
