When there is water damage, the wrong response can cost you! Avoid trying to clean up the damage yourself, call us, and it could even be completely covered by your insurance!

SERVPRO has put together some tips of what to do and what not to do in case of water damage in your home.

DO:

  • Shut off water if possible from the main source.
  • Turn off your power source when access to the power panel is safe from electrical shock.
  • Remove excess water with towels or a mop and wipe wet wooden surfaces.
  • Remove wet upholstery cushions and prop them upright so they can dry properly.
  • Put aluminum foil or even wooden blocks under wooden legs of furniture.
  • Remove any paintings or art, computers, or dry documents that are valuable.
  • Use clothespins to keep furniture skirts off wet floors, do the same with curtains.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.

DON'T:

  • Enter rooms with standing water.
  • Enter Affected areas if electrical outlets, or electrical equipment are exposed to water. Always avoid the electrical shock hazards.
  • Leave books, newspapers, magazines or anything else with color on carpet or floors that would cause staining.
  • Leave Oriental rugs or other colored rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.
  • Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water, possibly causing electrical shock or damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Use TV's or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors.
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.
